The Palace Museum

The National Palace Museum, also known as the National Palace Museum in Taiwan or the Taipei Palace Museum, is also known as the Zhongshan Museum. It is the largest museum in Taiwan and one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Taiwan. It is also an institution for the study of ancient Chinese art history and Sinology. The main building is located in Shilin District, Taipei City, and there is a southern branch in Taibao City, Chiayi County. It receives more than 6.14 million visitors a year and was ranked the sixth most visited art museum in the world in 2015.

The National Palace Museum has a collection of nearly 700,000 cultural relics and works of art, most of which were originally collected by the National Peking Palace Museum, the National Central Museum Preparatory Office, and the National Peking Library from the Forbidden City, Shengjing Palace, the Mountain Resort, the Summer Palace, the Jingyi Garden, and the Imperial College. Others were purchased with budgets, received from some cultural relics returned by Japan after the end of World War II, and donated and collected from all walks of life. The collection spans 8,000 years from the Neolithic Age to the present. The various collections are managed by three curatorial departments: the Artifacts Department, the Painting and Calligraphy Department, and the Southern Branch Department. Among them, the most influential collections are bronzes with long inscriptions, paintings and calligraphy by famous artists in the early ancient times, rare books, and official kiln porcelain. The exhibition hall displays 7,000 exhibits in a systematic chronological order according to the types of cultural relics. The artifacts are rotated every six months to two years, while the paintings, calligraphy, books and documents are replaced regularly every three months.

Its main deity is Guan Sheng Di Jun (Enzhugong), with attendant deities Guan Ping (Guan Sheng Tai Zi Ping), Zhou Cang (Zhou Enshi Cang), Lü Enzhu Dongbin, Zhang Enzhu Shan, Wang Enzhu Shan, and Yue Enzhu Fei—the Five Saints of Enzhu. The main temple also has two branch temples, located in Zhongyi Mountain, Beitou District, Taipei City, and Baiji Mountain, Sanxia District, New Taipei City, collectively known as the "Xingtian (Palace) Three Temples." The Beitou branch temple was the first to be completed, followed by the Sanxia Xingxiu Temple. The main temple in Taipei City was the last of the Xingtian Three Temples to be completed. The temple gate uses 108 door studs to represent the 108 deities, symbolizing the 36 Heavenly Stars and 72 Earthly Fiends.

Shuangcheng Night Market

Shuangcheng Street Night Market is almost entirely populated by old stalls, and there are many snacks that have been sold for more than 30 years. Because they are so delicious, word of mouth spreads, and even when it is windy or rainy, many old and new friends will come to report automatically. Although the scale of the night market is not large, the uniform orange-red signs are well-organized, making it the first regional demonstration night market in Taipei City. In addition, there are many pubs nearby, so some international friends will also come here. These stalls are doing very well. You don’t know until you go. You must come to try them anyway. The delicious Chiayi chicken rice is delicious and goes well with rice; the authentic boiled goose meat and the fragrant goose meat broth satisfy the picky mouth; the braised pork rice is also well-known. Huangji braised pork rice, like Chiayi chicken rice, won the Taipei City Braised Pork Rice Competition Award. It is naturally delicious. The braised pork with pork trotters and pig feet is more mellow but not greasy. Finally, don’t forget the desserts here, grandma’s traditional rice cakes and aiyu ice, nostalgic Taiwanese snacks, delicious beyond imagination!
